Common dental emergencies we treat today

Knocked-out tooth

The first 30–60 minutes are critical. Pick up by the crown only, rinse in milk or saliva (never water), and call us immediately. We re-implant and splint same-day.

Severe toothache

Pain that wakes you usually means infection has reached the nerve. Same-day appointment, focused exam, and treatment to get you out of pain, root canal, restoration, or extraction depending on the case.

Broken or chipped tooth

Save fragments in cold milk. Cold compress reduces swelling. We treat fractures into the nerve same-day; a small chip can usually wait until morning.

Facial swelling / abscess

Spreading infection is urgent, especially if it involves the eye or extends down the neck. Call us first; if we're closed and the swelling is rapidly worsening, head to the ER.

The avulsion (knocked-out tooth) protocol

If your adult tooth was knocked out, follow this exact sequence, and call us on the way to the office.

1. Find the tooth, handle by crown only

Pick up by the white crown, never touch the root. The cells on the root surface are what allow the tooth to reattach.

2. Rinse 10 seconds in milk or saliva

Never tap water (kills the periodontal ligament cells). Never scrub. Never soap. Cold milk, saline, or your own saliva, that's it.

3. Reinsert if possible, or store + call

What counts as a dental emergency?

My adult tooth was knocked out, what do I do right now?
Pick up the tooth by the white crown only, never the root. Rinse for 10 seconds in cold milk, saline, or saliva, never tap water or soap. If you can, gently push the tooth back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it. If you can't reimplant, store the tooth in cold milk or saliva and call us immediately. The first 30–60 minutes are the most important window for survival.
Do you accept walk-ins for emergencies?
Call first at (254) 965-2777. We hold same-day emergency appointment slots and can usually see established patients within two hours during business hours. Walk-ins are accommodated when a slot opens, but calling ahead lets us prepare the operatory for your specific emergency.
What about after-hours emergencies?
For life-threatening symptoms, trouble breathing, signs of severe allergic reaction, or rapidly worsening facial swelling, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do you treat emergencies for non-patients?
Yes. We see new patients in genuine emergencies even before completing the new-patient paperwork. Bring your insurance card and ID; the rest can be done after we have you out of pain.
I have a severe toothache but no swelling, should I wait?
Don't. A toothache severe enough to wake you typically signals an infection that's already moving toward the nerve. Antibiotics buy time but don't fix the underlying problem. The same-day visit identifies whether you need a filling, a root canal, or extraction, and the longer you wait the more invasive (and expensive) the treatment becomes.
Will dental insurance cover the emergency?
Most PPO plans cover the emergency exam and X-ray as a diagnostic visit. Treatment coverage depends on your plan and what's required. We accept Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, and most major PPOs. CareCredit financing is available if your share is more than expected.
